The top spot in the hills

There are lots of amazing places you can stay in the Dandenong Ranges, but my vote goes to Emerald. It’s a stunning little village that’s brimming with country charm – and I should know because I live here!

Now you might think I’m biased but I’ve lived in the hills for over 20 years and have come to know the region well. I’ve called both Sassafras and Kalorama home and now I’m based in Emerald. I chose to move here because … well … it’s pretty damned awesome,

Take it from me, whether you’re a resident or just visiting, Emerald is the place to be.

Emerald Lake Park

One of the key attractions is Emerald Lake Park (Lake Treganowan) with its paddle boats, swimming, fishing, magnificent gardens, forest walks, BBQs and many other family-friendly facilities.

Puffing Billy

The famous Puffing Billy steam train has not 1, not 2 but 3 stations in Emerald, one of which is situated in Emerald Park.

Hiking or biking

If you want to get close to nature, one trail that’s ideal for walkers and cyclists is the Emerald to Cockatoo Recreational Trail. It’s a comfortable 2.5hr walk that meanders through natural settings, including Emerald Lake Park and Wright Forest.  It’s perfect for Forest Bathing and you can even walk one way and return on Puffing Billy!

Not far away

And if all that’s not enough for you, Emerald is just a short drive from all the other villages and attractions in the Dandenongs like: William Ricketts Sanctuary, Skyhigh Lookout and Cloudehill Gardens.

Escape to Emerald

I’ve only listed a few of Emerald’s highlights. I didn’t even mention the fabulous cafes and restaurants, but I have to stop somewhere. Let’s just say that Emerald’s the perfect place to take a break – whether you’re a couple with romance in mind, or a family looking to explore.

Warning – blatant self promotion below!

If I’ve even come close to convincing you that Emerald is a truly special place (and it is), I can’t bring myself to close this post without tempting you stay at my place, Ferny Hill Retreat. Why not take a few days to enjoy all that Emerald has to offer?
